Like most African American students growing up in predominantly black schools, I was required to do a book report on a black historical figure for Black History Month. My love of doing my family members' hair inspired me to report on Madam C. J. Walker, who is recorded in the Guinness Book of World Records as the first female self-made millionaire in America. She established the headquarters for her manufacturing company right here in Indianapolis in 1910. Wow! I was impressed that a black woman in America had become a millionaire by making black hair care products before my lifetime. I didn’t grow up seeing too many black women owning businesses...
Madam’s passion was not only to make products and teach women how to style and groom their hair, but she was also an advocate for black women’s economic independence. Fast forwarding to 1981, at the time of my book report, I was not aspiring to have a hair care line, but it still manifested in my life anyway. Like Madame C. J., I started as a stylist, educating women from my salon about healthy hair care. Eighteen years later, I began collaborating with a chemist to bring about Majesty Hair Care products.
My custom moisturizing and hydrating hair products are made for ethnic hair to improve and grow our hair with ease. Like Madam Walker's, my products are unique and made with moisturizing, antioxidant, and preserving ingredients like Noni, Argan, Avocado, Marula, Grapeseed, Jojoba, and Sunflower Seed. Those who know me as a stylist will tell you, "Angela specializes in healthy hair care first." Although I’m still waiting for that millionaire status, I am proud to say that 42 years ago, Madam C. J. Walker’s story made a difference in the life of this young, black girl living in Indiana.
